Alternatives to Tumblr
This list will be updated as I find more alternatives. Please feel free to share any others with me.
- Twitter
This is an obvious alternative, and while it’s not the same as Tumblr, it has some similarities and can reach a wide audience. It does not have a built-in posting queue, though some third party tools may support that. - Reddit
If you have a community, setting up a subreddit is an easy way to establish a public forum for it. Individual users can post content to their profile pages as well, though it lacks advanced features like a queue. - Fetlife
A community for various adult/fetish topics and subcommunities. More of a Facebook-of-kink than a porn sharing platform. - Discord
This is a realtime chat platform that allows you to set up your own server with different channels, with web, desktop, and mobile app support. Another great option for establishing a central community location. Allows the sharing of media as well as all sorts of other options. - bdsmlr
This is a Tumblr clone explicitly created for adult content. It seems to still be in the early stages and is a bit clunky still, but has potential. It also lacks in users, currently, but I’m sure that will change before long! - pillowfort.io
This is another Tumblr-like service in early development. At the time of this post it is offline and undergoing security updates, but keep checking in to see how it progresses. - Sharesome
An adult platform for posting and sharing content. This has some Tumblr-like features, allowing the reposting of content, addition of your own comments and captions, and curation of custom topics. Doesn’t appear to support queueing. - Swarmr
A Tumblr clone that allows NSFW content and supports multiple blogs per account. There aren’t a great deal of options yet, and it doesn’t seem to have much content, but that could change quickly if people join. - Minds
A blockchain/crypto-based platform that allows posting and tagging adult content. Seems to have issues with searching adult tags, however, and doesn’t have a queue.
twitter etiquette for new users
- replying is how you make friends! reply to anything you want and be friendly. don’t make rude jokes if you’re not friends already though!
- quote retweeting is a no-no. when you “retweet with a comment” it’s not liked by content creators because it makes a new tweet out of their tweet and they don’t get the likes and retweets they would get if you’d just retweeted it straight up. if you want to comment on a retweet, reply to it or post a new tweet starting with “LRT” which stands for “last retweet” (it’s fine to quote retweet dumb memes and so on.)
- you can make your tweets private. this means no one but your followers will be able to see what you post and no one will be able to retweet your content. you can switch back and forth between private and public at will. some people make a separate private account to tweet personal stuff and let mutuals follow it only. it’s a good way to keep things separate.
- what is privatter? privatter is a third party web app that content creators can allow to be attached to their twitter. it lets them tweet content that they can make exclusive to logged in users, followers, mutuals, or a specific list of users. as long as you are logged in to twitter and fall into the intended category, you’ll be able to see it.
- you can mute people you follow. (and those you don’t, ofc.) you can also mute words and phrases and entire conversations. if you mute someone you follow and they reply to you, that reply will still show up in your notifications. it’s a good way to keep the peace!
- you can limit notifications to people who follow you or to mutuals. (notifications from people you follow will still show up regardless of which option you’ve selected.)
- miscellaneous tips and warnings: if you accidentally unfollow and refollow someone, it won’t show up in their notifications as long as it’s within a couple minutes. no more accidental stuff. everyone can see who everyone follows so watch out. people will know if you unfollow. if you want to report someone and want them gone forever, report a tweet where they used a curse word. screenshotting tweets for harassment is a no-no and can get you banned. don’t be lame. don’t be a dick. vaguing others is generally really bad form and so is complaining about content within a fandom you’re in. use the mute tools at your disposal and don’t be a spoiler. you won’t come back from a rep like that and everyone sees everything.
that’s it! happy tweeting!!
how do i keep all my content together on twitter?
- threads are your best friend!! you make a tweet with your commission info and links and so on and pin it to the top of your page. then reply to that tweet with a copy and pasted link to the tweet where you posted the art/fic/etc you want to not lose. reply to that new tweet with the next piece of artwork and so on. you can also make a unique hashtag for your content to use when you post, so that when you search that hashtag later you’re able to see just your art. good luck!
For all my friends jumping ship
Sounds bloody complicated if you ask me.
Stay tuned there are several people diligently working on a replacement - follow me for updates.
My Vision Of Our Tumblr Replacement
I started on Tumblr soon after it was created with a vanilla blog. Since then, hardly a day has gone by that Tumblr wasn’t a part of my life. I have made excellent friends on Tumblr over the years. In fact, MOST of my friends came from relationships I made via Tumblr. The precious, bubbly cupcake that is in my bed? Tumblr. So you can imagine how painful Tumblr’s announcement has been for me.
I love seeing the marginalized communities that are shunned elsewhere on Planet Earth have a safe place to exist and be themselves. It always made me smile when I see a Tumblr blogger ease out of their shells, steadfastly into the world.
Well, that shit is no more.
As some of you may have noticed I started a community effort to rescue these communities. I want everyone involved because it will be our garden, our club, our safe space to be ourselves.
And the new site (name to be withheld until we have something to show) is not just for kinksters, I want vanillas too; artists, witches, horror writers, brewmeisters, budtenders, book sluts, fandoms of all types, beat poets, wilderness photographers, Burners, vampire hunters, Dungeons and Dragons players, and rocket scientists. Hell, I want people who just want to blog about cats and cabins in the woods.
What we won’t tolerate are bullies, minors, Nazis (and their fucked up allies), abusers or trolls. They can fuck right off to a cesspool of their choice.
I am putting up the cash to get this started PLUS I am making this a community effort, that is why I am being so transparent about the process with our Discord planning group. Yes, it is chaos. We have taken on an INSANE project to get done in less than 2 weeks. Well, 9 days now.
This isn’t my first rodeo. I am actively trying to keep my anonymity as long as I can, but I know it will soon be spugged out in due order soon. You will then see what I have done in the past and learn about a very vanilla project that has been near and dear to my heart. You have probably heard of it and maybe even participated!
The beta site will not be perfect. It will be good but not perfect. Hell, we have been suffering with “far from perfect” with Tumblr now for years. It is my hope that our community can put up with our rough edges for a little while.
Where we are tonight is pretty good. We have selected a host, got our software loaded, installed the Linux packages required and are now getting those packages to play nice with one another. We had it working for a bit until a small issue with the registration page required some elbow work.
I am working on the branding and marketing with a bunch of really smart pervs in our Discord group. I am really proud of all of our volunteers and want to thank them all.
If you want to volunteer or simply eat popcorn and watch the porn riots, please use this invite link: https://discord.gg/jVempgb
Remember, Discord is just the site we are using for planning, not the actual site we are moving to.
Many of you have asked about the Library For Kinksters, it will be archived and placed on the now site.
We plan to allow you to import your Tumblr blog over to our new site but Tumblr may have other ideas. Other services have been using Tumblr’s API for exporting and now Tumblr now seems to be shutting down that API functionality.
That is all for now. Keep your heads held high and remember you are ALL FUCKING AMAZING PEOPLE!
- Dominant Life
P.S. Please reblog the shit out of this. Santa may drop a slutty elf off at your house for Christmas!
P.P.S. Oh and pirates. I really want pirates on the site too!
IMPORTANT: the real reason tumblr is enacting an adult content ban - and no, it isn’t because of ad space.
I have seen many petitions flying around and have signed some myself. However, the main issue isn’t tumblr, the App Store, or even Verizon’s wish to monitize ad space.
The issue is the Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) and Stop Enabling Sex Trafficking Act (SESTA) packaged set of bills. These bills were passed in April 2018 in US Congress, where websites are now liable for their content posted by 3rd parties - and can be sued if someone uses their website to solicit sex.
There’s been articles on this for a while, but they have gotten no where near as much publicity as needed - especially because it was a US bill that was passed rather than an international one. However, the effect it has internationally is widespread. No matter where you are, if you are an internet user, these bills WILL affect you.
It has directly affected websites and platforms such as Craigslist, Reddit, Microsoft, Instagram, etc., and is now affecting websites like Tumblr, Facebook, and more than likely Twitter and other platforms soon. The terms and conditions of these sites are very unlikely to change much if at all after they change to meet the current guidelines. It has affected third party users and has even been reported to have affected police in a negative way. The majority of articles on the bill are not written with positivity towards it, and it has been a controversial bill since the beginning.
This issue is not isolated to Tumblr, and even if you leave this website and switch to another, the rules will be similar or will soon be so. If you’ve been here for a long time - sure, open up some other accounts. However, I wouldn’t be so eager to jump ship - you’ll end up in the same waters.
FOSTA/SETSA has compromised section 230 of the 1996 CDA (Communications and Decency Act), which is known to have been the section that has given us the internet we have today by being a major part of internet freedom and protecting freedom of speech and expression online (by protecting hosts from being ultimately liable for third party content). There is speculation that in the future there will be more attempts made to make more acceptions or “poke holes” in section 230.
This packaged bill is what needs to be targeted by internet users internationally, and especially by US citizens as it is the US government who has put this into law. Due to lack of knowledge about this bill, previous petitions did not meet the required amount of attention. This bill is not only directly affecting tumblr, but is affecting the internet as a whole and it’s time to focus on the root of the cause.
In Summary:
- THIS ISSUE IS NOT ISOLATED TO TUMBLR.
- The adult content ban by Tumblr is NOT caused by the website curators or the Apple App Store.
- The main cause of the adult content ban is NOT Verizon trying to monitize ad space, but requirements by the US FOSTA/SESTA combined bill.
- FOSTA/SESTA has poked a hole in the 1996 CDA, section 230 which protects web hosts from being liable by content posted by 3rd parties.
- Now, websites will be liable and can be sued for content posted by their users, notably in relation to the solicitation of sex.
- It is speculated that further attempts will he made to break down parts of section 230.
- Although it is a US Bill, it affects the entire World Wide Web. This new joint bill has directly impacted several other websites and continues to do so.
- Due to lack of public knowledge, previous petitions did not meet requirements.
- FOSTA/SESTA repeal needs to be the main focus by tumblr users and social networking sites as a whole.
So, what can be done?
- Read this tweet, and thread from twitter user Aditya Mukerjee (@chimeracoder) for more information on what you can do, and more information about what is going on.
- Please, share this info. If you have additional information on this, or what US and intentational citizens can do to help with a repeal, please reblog this post and add it.
DO NOT DELETE YOUR BLOGS!!
Tumblr is specifically banning CONTENT not entire blogs! Don’t loose your hard-earned followings just yet! I know this is a big loss for the sex worker community but there may be some hope left for us here. A lot of people have been talking about using censors, posting non-nude ads, etc. so don’t delete your blogs just yet! It’s irreverable and you may regret it later on. Wait it out, and let’s see where this goes. We WILL adapt. ❤️
Please let it just be this!! I don’t want to lose my tumblr fam 😢
Boosting! Blogs will remain!! its the content that’s getting fucked which I’m sure for most means they will leave Tumblr on their own accord as it won’t meet your needs anymore
BOOSTING
REBLOG IF YOU’RE A NSFW BLOG
We all have seen the Tumblr communicate about forbidding nsfw blogs or those which have “adult” posts.
They think it won’t cause them any harm, but we are a really big part of the community. Let’s act and tell the staff that tumblr will slowly die after taking this decision. Follow these steps:
- First of all, REBLOG THIS POST, so any NSFW blog can post and see it.
- Give tumblr the worst mark at the App Store or Play Store
- Write a negative comment about how they’re banning accounts and censoring the freedom of expression.
- Purpose as a comment below a new site to move as a NSFW community.
If you do this before the 17 of December, we can change this decision. Let’s make the staff hear us. Make tumblr great again, a free place for free minds and free content!!
Personally, I enjoyed every single moment here at tumblr, and I appreciate everyone of my followers and blogs that I follow. If they delete my account… It was a pleasure to know you all. But we can still change this!!!
Regards!
